Acupuncture Surrey

Acupuncture treatment at RehabMAX PhysiotherapyAcupuncture is a therapeutic method used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain, and improve function of the affected areas of the body. It is a treatment technique where fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body. This stimulates the nervous system to produce analgesic (pain relieving) and anti-inflammatory substances, which can be helpful in the recovery process. It is used to reduce inflammation, pain and increase mobility.

Our physiotherapists are trained and accredited in acupuncture by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI). This training combines knowledge of anatomy and physiology with anatomical based acupuncture knowledge and training.

Our clinicians use acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment for patients with acute or chronic musculoskeletal problems. We only use new disposable needles for each treatment session. Acupuncture is safe and effective and is often successfully used as an alternative to pain medications.

IMS Surrey

intramuscular stimulation Stimulation

IMS, or dry needling (both terms are often used interchangeably), is an effective treatment for chronic pain syndromes that affect the musculoskeletal system. Developed by Dr. Chan Gunn, it is based on scientific neurophysiological principles. IMS involves the insertion of fine acupuncture type needles into the body where muscles have shortened or contracted. Problems at these points are often at the root of long-term pain.

While a muscle is tight and contracted, it can’t heal properly. IMS, or intramuscular stimulation, may be used to release specific taut muscle bands that hold certain parts of the body in poor alignment or posture. This malalignment often contributes to poor movement patterns and posture, leading to chronic pain.

The effects of IMS are cumulative in that each needling session stimulates a certain amount of healing. IMS can provide lasting pain relief for many people suffering from chronic pain and has few side effects.
