Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a condition where one spinal bone (vertebrae) slips forward over the bone beneath it.  This typically occurs in the very low back at the 4th or 5th lumbar vertebrae.  Symptoms can be mild such as general ache in the low back or severe if there is compression on the nerves exciting the spine. There are varying degrees of severity of spondylolisthesis. Most fall into a mild or moderate category that can be stabilized with better posture and improved muscle strength. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to fuse the vertebrae and return stability back to the area.

How our physiotherapists can help

Our physiotherapists will perform a detailed assessment to determine what the problems are in your back and then create a program that will specifically address those deficiencies.  You will be provided with an appropriate stretching and strengthening program that will help to stabilize your spine.  In addition, education on proper posture will also be reviewed with you to reduce future further deterioration of your condition.  Your pain and discomfort will also be mitigated with the use of thermal and electrical modalities, as well as the option of receiving acupuncture.  In the event that surgery is required, our physiotherapists will help you get as strong as possible before the surgery.  We will also help you reach your optimal recovery after surgery.  Book an appointment today to allow us to show you how we can help you get back on your feet!
